China refuses to accept British plastics waste on the grounds that it is too dirty. The tide seems to be turning against industrialized countries that have previously used developing nations as dumping grounds. Improved measures for dealing with waste need to be fostered by the countries in which the waste is produced.
Reducing comsumption is the most obvious solution, but not the most plausible. Re-using packaging that comes with consumer goods for other purposes is one way to deal with the problem on an individual basis. (Castaway Characters second this motion.) Any plastic waste that is discarded needs to be classified accurately at the refuse collection stage if it is to be treated successfully later on.
